I’m in the Mood

I asked the children the other day what costumes they wanted to wear for the annual Harvest Festival this year. You see, I made their costumes last year; River’s ninja outfit and Lily’s crown. They turned out quite well, but I was literally cutting strings as River went running out the door. Although he loved his costume, my memories of the entire experience are not as pleasant.

I decided to make River’s costume less than one week before it was due much like I did their 4th of July outfits. It’s not that I sew slowly, but rather that I’m an emotional seamstress. I have to be in the mood to sew, otherwise, it just won’t get done. Nothing ruins a great sewing experience more than a deadline (that I set) to finish a project.

Since I’ve finally realized this fact, I decided that it would probably be a good idea to go ahead and start on the three costumes I plan to make and complete by October. Start them NOW.

River has been stuck on everything Ironman. He has never seen a movie (and probably won’t anytime soon), but a commercial or two has slipped in and he’s kind of fond of the armor. The armor is cool. I checked the price on some of that costume armor. Let’s just say I’m trying to figure out how to do the same using a cardboard box.

Finally, we have moved away from princesses. Lily tried to change her mind back to being a princess after saying she wanted to dress up like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, but I told her “nope” that she couldn’t change her mind because “it was already out there.” I’ve been waiting for years to dress her up like Dorothy, so she is going to be Dorothy this year. She’s fine with it. The princesses have been dethroned and can reign again next year.

My only thoughts on how Canyon decided on Superman, well I really don’t know. He likes saying he’s “super,” which translates to strong, but he hasn’t ever seen a Superman movie. His costume may be the one I do a little improvising on. I’m thinking sweat pants because I can’t imagine him in red tights. I already know I’m going to have to eventually make capes for all three of them, so I may go ahead and work on those too. Agh…more work!

Man, I’m already feeling the pressure to finish these costumes. I guess I better head to the fabric store so I can start working on them because, right now, I’m in the mood.

Have your children decided on their costumes yet? Do you ever dress up too?

It sounds like you have your work cut out for you. You will get it done.

My kiddos like to dress up around the house. Capes are a must here too. We are still in Princess mode and transformers abound too.

    Rana,

I’m already wondering what I’ve committed myself too and WHY! I have cape fabric I bought last year that is still folded, neatly I might add, in the corner with all of the other fabric I’ve managed to collect over the past few months. See, that is why I need to start now.

A princesses and a Transformer. Are these also their costume choices?

haha, my daughter and I were just talking about that the other day. She very emphatically wants to be a robot this year – I am thinking some boxes and glittery paint will pull that one off nicely.
The boys change their minds daily, but the 2-year-old will pretty much wear whatever I decide, so we’ll see.
A couple of years ago, the whole family dressed up as Super Mario characters. All the costumes were handmade and I about killed myself getting them done. The pictures look great, but like you, not pleasant memories! :)
good luck with the ironman costume!
