Outside My Door, Down the Street, and Around the Corner

Their faces pretty much say it all; Lily is appalled, River is embarrassed, and Canyon, well, he just is dumbfounded. Shamefully, despite how small our little town is, I never seem to know what’s going on here. I can tell you what’s happening in Memphis, Jackson, and even Nashville, but just outside my door, down the street and around the corner, I haven’t got a clue. I’m slowly learning the weekly routine which includes the post office window closing ½ hour earlier than I’m used to, everything shutting down on Sunday, and the farmer’s market is open two days a week.

In fact, that is where we were headed, the farmer’s market, when we got side tracked by our town’s first annual music festival. This is not the first time I’ve set out on a Saturday morning and ended up on a full day detour.

Actually, there really isn’t anything wrong with discoveries, but it would have been nice to have known ahead of time, and then I could have planned to see everything the festival had to offer. This piano as well as a few others were displayed throughout town.

I found this one on the corner of Main Street open and ready for playing. I thought about tickling the ivories a little although it’s been years since I’ve played. Then again, I also thought about how I could load it onto the back of Darling D’s truck and take it home. It is only in small town USA that decorative pianos can be left out for display with no monitoring.

Back over at the farmer’s market, there was a woodturner who had his creations on display and his spinning tops caught our eyes.

He also had his lathe by his side, probably a love thing, on which he was working. He reminded me a little of myself as I stood with camera in hand.

The spinning tops he had on display and for sale were being grabbed up by potential buyers leaving just a few, not enough for my crew, to purchase.

He recognized our dismay and kindly offered to make the children custom made spinning tops.

Not only was he going to make them especially for them, but he was going to do so right before our eyes,

They would also get to choose the colors that would adorn their tops.

Just like a girl, Lily chose shades of pink and just like boys, River and Canyon chose shades of blue. Actually, those are just their favorite colors, for now.

This part looked like a lot of fun. It reminded me of the paint spinner that splatters paint onto a piece of paper and allows you to “create” art. The only thing is that this technique requires a steadier hand.

This gives you an idea about the detail.

Just a few finishing touches were needed.

A little sanding for good measure.

It all amounts to made to order, good, clean, and natural fun.
