Heirloom Audio Productions: Under Drake’s Flag {TOS review}

We received the physical two CD pack audio adventure Under Drake’s Flag from Heirloom Productions.

Heirloom Audio Productions has put together an audio drama of Under Drake’s Flag, which takes its listeners along the way for a couple of hours of excitement, drama and a whole lot of fun. The audio follows the adventures that children’s literature novelist George Alfred (G.A.) Henty wrote about in his novel of the same title that was published in 1883. Typically, reading a book written during that time period may prove a bit daunting or may be down-right boring, but boredom never comes up while listening to the drama.

My children love audio-dramas and I am so glad they do. Audio-dramas (and audio-books) require concentration and attention and sometimes a good imagination to make the story truly come to life.

Under Drake’s Flag is a two hour long production that is geared to listeners ages six and older. Many of Henty’s books have main characters that are male and face challenges. In Under Drake’s Flag, listeners are introduced to Ned Hawkshaw, who is journeying on the high seas with Sir Francis Drake. There are sharks, swashbuckling and moral lessons to be learned by Ned as well as by the listeners of heirloom_productions01the story. If you have high definition capabilities, by all means turn the volume up.

The plan was for my children to listen to the CDs over a few days, but I knew that was not going to happen, and I was right. River started listening to it immediately after unwrapping the package from the morning mail. Even the illustration on the CD pack is captivating, so plan for a possible full two hour listening session. If you think about the time your child spends watching a movie, then the time is just about the same spent listening to the audio.

After sitting and listening for two hours, the learning does not stop at that point. Heirloom Audio Productions has created a study guide. The use of the study guide is optional, so the CDs may be enjoyed independently. We opted to not use the study-guide the first time around, but will probably return to the story again and do so, because there are a lot of subjects covered in the guide.

There is a mini-study guide included in the CD package that has questions focusing on each chapter. Heirloom Audio Productions also has created a downloadable .PDF study-guide that is more extensive. It contains three sections – Listening Well, Thinking Furthers and Defining words – that promote a more in depth study of the drama and cover the vocabulary of some of the terms used in the story. There are also bible studies with scripture, so you can make this an academic experience that covers subjects like bible, history and vocabulary. If your child would like to learn more about Sir Francis Drake, then a list of suggested reading is also included.

River had some comments about Under Drake’s Flag:

“I liked learning about the things they had to do to maintain the ship, like unloading weight if it got too heavy and having to climb a rope ladder to the watch post and lookout for enemies and rocks, because they didn’t have radar like we do today.”

He added:

“The battles were really hard, because the canons don’t move and you had to be a skilled marksman to aim and shoot at your target. Loading the canon wasn’t easy and it to four people.”

Lily also shared:

“It was really and I liked the adevntures. It never gets boring, because they always have something good to say. Ned and his friend are very loyal to God. They were sentenced to death, because they didn’t worship the way their captives thought they should. You’ll have to listen this great adventure to find out what happens,” said Lily.

She also added, regarding TOS reviews in general:

”It is great that we are able to get cool things to review like Under Drake’s Flag.”

The two CD set of Under Drake’s Flag is available for $29.95 plus shipping and handling at $6.95 and the downloadable version is available for $20. See more information about the purchase options and specials. They even offer a 90-day money back guarantee.
