Lots & Lots of Fire Trucks & Firefighters {TOS Review}

The love of fire engines in our house began more than eight years ago when River was a little boy. Canyon later joined him and now, I have two fire engine lovin’ boys living in my house. Lots & Lots of Fire Songs & Safety Tips – DVD and Lots & Lots of Fire Trucks & Firefighters – book were both well and quickly received in our home. I did not even get to read any of the information about the products before River popped in the DVD and they both sat mesmerized as they sat and watched the “non-stop attention grabbing half-hour of learning fun!”

As companies go, Marshall Publishing and Promotions, Inc. is relatively new. They have only been around for four years, but in that short time, have is already created award-winning products for children and adults (ages 3 to 93) that are exclusively available through home video distribution. Collectively, their management team has represented and produced more than 35 television and home video programs that have been broadcast onn the U.S. and international markets. Endorsements have been given by such organizations as The Dove Foundation, Coalition for Quality Children’s Programs, and is parent recommended for children with autism.

They have a long list of educational DVD and book offerings that also include Lots & Lots of Trains (this would also be a winner in our home), animals, jets and planes, educational DVDs covering people like George Washington Carver (another DVD we got to preview) which is well written and gives great insight into a very humble, but brilliant and intelligent man, language DVDs, and more.

The video segments on Lots & Lots of Fire Songs & Safety Tips – DVD include the following:

  • Lots and Lots of Fire Trucks
  • Call 911
  • Fireman Jim’s Safety Tips
  • Stop, Drop and Roll
  • Your Home Safety Plan
  • It’s an Emergency
  • Heroes Brave and Tall
  • Great Big Fire Trucks
  • Fire Trucks in Action

You can follow watching the DVD with the book or read the book first. Lots & Lots of Fire Trucks & Firefighters is a 124 page, high-glossed book with quality photographs and several chapters of everything you would want to know about fire engine truck, firefighters, and the history fire. Some of the chapter topics include:

  • Firefighters Tools & Equipment
  • Fire Science Basics
  • Words of the Firefighter (Fireman’s Prayer, A Fireman’s Wife’s Prayer, Ten Commandments of Firefighters, and more)
  • Classic Firehouse Traditions (which gives an explanation of the Maltese Cross which is the badge of a firefighter, explains how the dalmatian became the fire house dog, and includes recipes for some firehouse favorites)
  • History of Fire Trucks & Fire Fighting
  • Greatest Fires in History (includes such fires as the ones that occurred during the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 supposedly started by Daniel “Pegleg” Sullivan who was trying to steal some milk)
  • A complete listing of Fire House Museums in the US.

Even though River and Canyon watched the DVD all the way through in one sitting, there is the option of using the DVD as a classroom tool by choosing the 12-minute information segment that teaches the fundamentals of fire safety.

We all enjoyed watching the video. The reminders of “stop, drop, and roll” and creating a home safety plan were good and we put one together and practiced going through our plan. Our meeting place is outside under our favorite reading tree and if danger is too close, then across the street at a neighbors house.

Did you know that firefighters use different type of vehicles when fighting fires? I did only because, as I mentioned before we have some lovers here, my sons educated me on this fact a while ago. If you did not know, then you might find the chapter on Rescue Vehicles quite interesting.

The “Great Big Fire Trucks” segment quickly took us through the construction of a firetruck. I never really thought about it, but I guess someone has to build those huge trucks.

The pictures in the book are quite effective because of the color. It would also be a great resource for 4th through 8th graders (target audience) to have on hand for a study on firefighting because of the history contained. The book is even current through the contribution of firefighter on September 11 which is mentioned in the chapter called Greatest Fires in History.
