They’re Green in Tennessee

Okay. I must admit that, yes, I was a little surprised. Being somewhat new to the area, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Well, I just want to let you know that Memphis really is green and I’m not just talking grass either. Actually, there were quite a few Earth Day events throughout the state to choose from, but we decided to keep our partying closer to home in support of the day and that made Memphis our destination.

The Down to Earth Celebration, held at Shelby Farms, completed its third year of bringing together Tennesseans for “celebrating nature, community, health and our environment.” Admission was FREE, which always makes an event a little more attractive. The weather didn’t disappoint while staying true to form with its typical spring showers mixed in with an otherwise very warm and sunny day.

This was promoted as a family-friendly event and there were quite a few activities to keep children busy. The event, as a whole, wasn’t as large as I had hoped and I would have liked to have seen more eco-friendly products represented as well as some workshops or demos, but I can say that I’m excited for what the event will continue to become over the next few years.

Lily and River hit the craft table and created sand filled necklaces. The craft areas provided great entertainment for the kids.

Something I have wanted to start for the last, oh so many months is a compost bin. I bought some worms (red wigglers) and hope that will motivate me to get started.

I’m not really sure how fire eating and eco-friendly fare went together, but Nadia Sophia, the Fire Dancer, brought the strolling crowd to a halt as she well, ate fire.

I asked for a disclaimer as to not encourage my brood to try this at home. I mean look here. I believe Nadia was thinking, “Forget home, maybe even I shouldn’t try this here.”

Second…third, maybe even fourth thoughts. I mean, if she’d changed her mind, then she would have still ranked high in my book for even considering eating it.

I guess she wanted to save face because, here she goes…

and it’s gone. Do you think she would have preferred a veggie burger w/that fire?

I went from one shocking experience to another as this moose, the Shelby Farms mascot, suddenly appeared next to me and wanted to strut. I’m not sure if I was being welcomed or challenged.

I think Tim Schnippert with WTCCC has the solution for every parent with a child who is attached to any electronic device whether it is a video game, a computer, or they are potato sack television watchers. He was pedaling on this bike to charge a battery for the electricity he was going to use at home later that day. I wonder how many of us would use as much electricity as we do if we had to actually make it. I will say that it is a great way to get a little exercise and lose some weight.

Yeah, I was mesmerized too. We were walking past the main stage area and McKenna Tucker was singing Amazing Grace and oh, how sweet was the sound. This budding country/blue grass music star was fantastic. We were headed home when we passed the stage and decided to sit through the rest of her performance.

She loves animals and has conservation on the mind, but I’m looking forward to her first album release which may be sometime next year.

McKenna kindly agreed to pose with Lily here and was very patient as I struggled to adjust my lens and get the proper camera position. Guess what? McKenna is a homeschooler too!
