Signed, Sealed, Delivered {review}

Signed, Sealed, Delivered, a new original series created and executive produced by Martha Williamson, gives families a reason to come together and enjoy television again with a program that is appropriate for all ages. Williamson takes viewers behind the scenes of the postal service introducing them to charming Oliver O’Toole (Eric Mabius), the group’s leader and man of faith who prayerfully approaches his work with the goal of making a difference in people’s lives; new team member, Shane McInerney (Kristin Booth), a technophile who brings 21st century sensibility to the group; free-spirited, “girl next door” Rita Haywith (Crystal Lowe) who has a photographic memory; and lovable Norman Dorman (Geoff Gustafson), a master in conventional research methods. The four are postal detectives who work as a team tracking down the recipients of undeliverable mail. The mail they deliver “changes futures by arriving late, but somehow always on time.” Does that remind you of someone?

If the name Martha Williamson sounds familiar to you, then that might be as she is also the creator of Touched By An Angel (TBAA). Just as she did in TBAA, Williamson weaves stories through the lives of her characters each week as she presents a new story and a new challenge for the detective team. Williamson, as she did in TBAA, does not miss an opportunity to share the word of God in Signed, Sealed, Delivered.

My family and I had the opportunity to watch episode number six, “The Future Me” (see promo above), which aired May 25 that has the team tracking the author of a letter addressed to a newlywed. The revelation of the author and recipient add a unique twist to the story as the team meets a special couple with desires to marry, despite their challenges.

The episode also has a side story with Rita preparing to compete in the Miss Special Delivery pageant. For you Taxi fans, you may recognize a familiar face from the past in the character Glynis Rucker. Although somewhat comedic, there are also some profound lessons to be learned from this tie-in story. One statement that Rita makes as she transforms into a “viable” contestant is, “If people see the new me, then they won’t see the real me.”

A unique supplement (read more and sign-up) created by The American Bible Society is a seven-day bible study that goes with the series. Each episode has its own study that allows viewers to delve further into the biblical themes presented in the weekly episode. You watch the episode and may join your family in bible study over the week that covers the episode until the next one airs.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered may be seen Sundays on the Hallmark Channel 8/7 CT. Martha Williamson has given families a reason to sit and enjoy watching television together again.
