Family movie nights are back. Actually, they didn’t really go anywhere, but Family Movie Night by Wal-Mart and P&G are back with a Game of Your Life which is a new feature that is sure to entertain even the geekiest ones in your family.

This time, we meet highschooler Zach Taylor – a.k.a. technology wiz, gamer, and a young man who proves that being “geeky” is totally cool. Zach is one of several students who is accepted to the Digital Institute of Game Design (DIGD) which is a prestigious learning institute where the best of the best in technology and design attend. This rare opportunity offers hims the chance to study under gaming legend Marcus Bentton and gives him the major jump-start he needs to pursue his dreams of becoming a professional video game designer. Zach’s first challenge is making it through the first three months which is the “make it or break it” period for the freshman class during which many students will be eliminated from the program.

Zach is partnered with his two roommates (stereotypical, but occasionally funny geeks) and a former online game friend that make up a team to tackle their first school project that depends on the special skills of each member; Zach being a designer. Everything is running smoothly, until Zach learns that his father’s financial struggles are continuing to grow which could result in loosing everything he has known – his father’s business and Zach’s childhood home that is the only place he has left to remind him of his mother who died years earlier.

When Zach is presented with an opportunity to work on a special secret project with Marcus Bentton and also earn some money, he jumps at the chance despite the warning given to the students at the beginning of the year to only concentrate on their school work. With the belief that he can handle the work required of both projects, Zach begins dividing his time and energy which soon proves to be too much for him. While trying to juggle everything, Zach begins to let down his teammates who trusted him, threatens his academic status in school, and also eventually learns that the one he admires is truly not one to be trusted.

See movie trailer:

Game of Your Life is a nice addition to Family Movie Night. As the movies in this project continue to be released, I have to tell you that I get excited when I learn of a new title coming out. I also like that there was more racial diversity in this movie which I hope continues. I think regardless of race, we all like good family-friendly movies and it is nice to see some of all of us depicted in a positive manner at one point or another.

We watched this movie on one of our family movie nights and it was fun to enjoy an upcoming television show that my children (and yours) and I could watch together without me having to worry about the content being inappropriate. I also like the fact that these movies provide lessons to be learned by the characters which opens up an opportunity for discussion during (I talk all of the time.) and after the movie.

Put this one on your schedule to watch on Friday, December 2 on NBC. You can connect with other Game of Your Life fans on Facebook and also see what people are tweeting about the movie on Twitter.

I am so ready for Christmas that I am even looking forward to the little bit of snow (like here and here) that we have gotten in the past years. Yep! I said it, “come on Christmas…come on snow.”

Along with the great expectation of the season – delicious food and festive music – comes some good movie watching and I have already seen two great Christmas, family friendly movies that have only heightened my excitement for the upcoming celebration.

Christmas Lodge is Thomas Kinkade on the screen and what I mean by that is if you are familiar with his magnificent artwork that draws you in and makes you want to be there, then that is exactly how Christmas Lodge makes you feel. The spirit of the season, family, faith, holiday traditions, and preserving the past all come together in this adorable movie that you will enjoy with your family and will want to make a family tradition to watch in forthcoming years.

On a weekend getaway to the mountains, Mary stumbles upon the Christmas lodge after rescuing a little girl who turns out to be the daughter of the owner (Jack) of the lodge which has fallen into disrepair over the years. Immediately upon entering the lodge, memories of many Christmases spent there with her family pass through her mind as she learns of Jack’s vision to return the Christmas Lodge to “her glory.” The only thing stopping him is the lack of funds.

Determined to salvage a place that had such a tremendous impact on her family, Mary uses her professional skills for building restoration, enlist the building construction skills of her family, and partners with Jack to make the lodge a place where other families can come and enjoy, as her family did, and make new memories. As Mary helps Jack rebuild a family treasure close to his heart, she also opens her heart to true love.

This movie is a wonderful pick for all family members and made for a great family movie night for us. Mary’s close relationship with her grandfather, who actually inspires her to work on the project despite its challenges, is one built on love and hope, a mutual respect for the outdoors, and the belief in the miracles of God.

Oh, and the romance. Never did it make me blush, but it was still sweet. It was just the way you want it to be when you are watching a movie with your children.

Watch the trailer:

BOSS
I saw a star last night. I mean, I saw my sister…not in person. Actually, I have not seen my sister Karen at all this year, but I did see her last night and she is starring in the new STARZ Original Series Boss with Kelsey Grammar. She literally opens the show, lips and all, and get this, she is playing a doctor. Calling doctor Karen. That has a very interesting ring to it. I’m not really sure I would want her operating on me, but she could probably act her way to the front of the operating doors. Just don’t hand her a scalpel.

Kelsey Grammar plays Chicago Mayor Tom Kane who is just like any other politician – deceptive, immoral, ruthless…really, must I go on? He runs Chicago like it is his own, which in many ways it is, but as this man of power begins a new term, he is faced with a new adversary that challenges his mental and physical being. That adversary is in the form of a degenerative brain disorder that threatens his career and his position of power.

There is only one person who knows his secret…Yes, Yes, his doctor, Dr. Ella “Karen” Harris. Hmm, this could get very interesting especially since Kane does not want his secret to be revealed.

Boss is for mature audiences and I will admit that if it were not for my sister starring in it, then I would not be talking about Boss. I watched the first episode and it has enough intrigue and “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll” to keep the average audience member hooked for the season. In my older age, my eyes and ears have become a little more sensitive to what they tolerate. You can watch the trailer.

For those of you who can handle just about anything, then you can watch the first episode. For those of you who just want to see my sister, then start at the beginning of the first episode and count your minutes. She is on the screen at the very beginning and then at the following minutes of the show: 22:58, 38:23, 43:50, 57:53, and then 59:00. Thanks Dad! Yep! My family is a little weird like that.

CLYBOURNE PARK
If you happen to be local to Chicago or will be passing through sometime before November 13, then you can also catch Karen on stage in Clybourne Park at the Steppenwolf which explores racial relations in two different periods 50 years apart. In the late 1950′s, tensions are sparked in a quiet suburban neighborhood when the first black family moves in and later again in 2009 when a young white couple buys the same home, takes ownership, and plans to demolish it.

Cathy Rush is a newly married woman who has not easily transitioned into her role as housewife and bleacher warming cheerleader for her NBA referee husband. Both Cathy and her husband have a love of basketball and as a former college basketball player, she is not satisfied with only watching from the sidelines.

When the opportunity of becoming a basketball coach at the Catholic all-girls’ Immaculata College opens up, Cathy jumps at the opportunity despite opposition from her husband. It does not matter that the college offers her practically nothing in pay due to it being on the verge of bankruptcy, or that the gymnasium no longer exist due to fire, or that most of the players lack competitive basketball skills. It also does not matter that she receives minimal support from Mother St. John, the president of the college and also the person who hired her to basically be a baby sitter for these young girls.

What matters is that Cathy has a dream and she realizes that unless she does everything possible to fulfill it, she will never be at peace with herself. Cathy sets her aspirations high especially since this is the first year (1971-1972) in women’s basketball that a national champion will be crowned.

Immaculata Mighty Macs – National Champions…impossible, maybe, but Cathy never stops long enough to consider all of the obstacles. She pushes through coaching her team and along the way sparks a confidence in her players, garners support from the students, the nuns at the college, the community, and eventually Mother St. John who rally around these underdog basketball players.

There are heart warming moments like when Cathy and the girls return from a competition, past curfew, and are confronted by Mother St. John. Cathy is immediately apologetic having already been warned about keeping the girls out past curfew. Instead of being chastised, Cathy and the team not only learn they are going to the championship but waiting to greet them is a room full of Immaculata students and faculty with congratulations.

Later, following in another scene as the team is doing a photo-shoot for their new celebrity, the girls gather clothing and accessories for a fellow teammate after the photographer insist she “move to the back” because he thinks she is inappropriately dressed. You see growth in the girls who all joined the team for selfish reasons come together as a team on and off of the court.

In regards to the affect her coaching has on her marriage, Cathy is reminded by her assistant coach nun to “keep her eye on the ball,” and she is not talking about basketball. Cathy is determined as a coach and we have to assume that she and her husband resolve their differences because he is later shown, in between his games, warming the bleachers and rooting her on to victory.

This is an inspiring, true story of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Cathy Rush who led The Mighty Macs of Immaculata College to three consecutive AIAW national titles (1972-1974). Also an inductee into the women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, Cathy far surpassed her dreams.

Cooper and Me (read review) is a book series created by Alexa Peters that promotes the exploration of life together as parents and children read books that cover subjects of everyday experiences (life lessons) children have. The stories are engaging and entertaining and present content that hopes to give children tools that will “help them gain emotional resilience.” The books are co-written (w/her mother) and colorfully illustrated by Alexa who has been drawing since an early age.

Currently, there are two books in the series, Cooper and Me (read review) and Copper and Me and the first Halloween, with two additional books coming, Cooper and Me and the Winter Adventure scheduled for release in November, and Cooper and Me and the Military which is due early 2012.

Alexa’s desire to help children navigate through life more easily doesn’t stop at author and illustrator, but continues as she and her mother also donate a portion of the proceeds from Cooper and Me to Happy Hearts Fund, which was created by supermodel Petra Nemcova, who was one of the many affected by the Thailand tsunami.

Happy Hearts Fund works directly with children affected by natural disasters and helps them through education and sustainable programs by rebuilding schools and assisting children and others with needs in their communities. Cooper and Me’s musical director, Bridget Mason Doran, was also inspired by the efforts of Happy Hearts Fund and wrote an original song, “One Heart” (listen to song) of which a portion of the proceeds are also going towards supporting the effort of Happy Hearts Fund.

If I say Rebecca St. James, then the first thing that probably comes to mind is music artist. If that is the case, then you would be right, but did you also know that she is the author of several books and What is He Thinking?? is her latest release?

Australian born Rebecca is all about “the creative” as a Grammy Award winning artist, Dove Award recipient, winner of Favorite Female Artist in Contemporary Music by CCM Magazine readers (seven consecutive years), winner of Best Female Artist by Christianitytoday.com (five consecutive year), a character voice in a Veggie Tales movie, and an author of books.

Recently married St. James has been an inspiration to many young girls through song and her books where she has encouraged them about purity, modesty, and patience as they wait on the one God has specially made for them.

In What is He Thinking??, she gives women insight into what a godly man is looking for when considering courtship and eventually marriage. Rebecca opens the floor to single young men, ages 20-35, from all walks of life – from the boy next door to men in high-profile positions – and they share their thoughts on many topics that include how women can not only respect themselves, but also the men in their lives, taking relationships slowly, and something I think many young people tend to disregard the importance of which is “letting guys lead” in the relationship. Some of the personal questions the men are asked are the following:

What do you find beautiful?

How can we help you with boundaries physically?

Is neediness a turn-off

Rebecca also gets personal as she discusses her experience dating as a Christian, the struggle she had with loneliness, and relying on God to direct her dating life.

This books is not just for young or single people and also has interviews from older mentors, which include her life coach and pastor father, and other men who have been married successfully for many years. This book is not just about dating, but also about steps to consider when beginning the dating relationship, going through it, and the growth of that relationship as it possibly leads to a marriage relationship.

Jeremy Riddle is back on the scene with his latest release, Furious, that has been in the making for almost one year. He describes his new CD by saying…

“It’s hard to come up with words that depict the magnitude of Christ’s love – the depth and width of it. Furious doesn’t work outside of the context of love; we tend to translate the word as angry, but I see it as a super-powerful force; stronger, deeper, broader than our vocabulary can fully describe.”

Earlier this year, Jeremy and his wife Katie ended a four year stint of touring which although the experience allowed him to continue ministering to God’s people, it lead him away from where he believes his true ministry is which is connecting with the body of a church and being a part of a local community of believers. He and his wife were led to Bethel Church in Redding, CA which is where Jeremy now calls home as the worship community pastor at the church that has more than 200 people.

Jeremy has found his local community and many of the songs you hear on the Furious CD are also featured on a recent album from Bethel Church which is titled Be Lifted High.

With this CD, Jeremy has been able to grow as an artist and gives much credit of Furious to the many people who have come into his life and who have inspired him which is much of what you hear in his songs.

The music is very soothing and melodic and the lyrics are ones that are uplifting and you can hear the praise and worship from Jeremy’s heart. This is a good CD to listen to prior to a quiet time of worship.

Listen to Jeremy:

I don’t really know why, but I have always been drawn to the Amish and their way of living. It could be the simplicity of it all – making due with what is readily available to you, not having a need to depend on outside resources, living within ones means, and only possessing what one really needs and not what one wants. There may be more, but that is enough to explain why I have always been curious.

The Shunning is the first book of three in The Heritage of Lancaster County series written by Beverly Lewis and brought to the screen by Michael Landon, Jr. (director of Janette Oke’s Love Comes Softly series). The story opens with Laura Mayfield-Bennett, an English (a person not from the Amish community), desperately searching for the baby she gave up at birth who was adopted by parents from an Amish community. That baby is Katie, now a young woman who has struggled most of her life with her faith and the Amish rules, and this burden weighs more heavily upon her since she is soon to be married. By accident, Katie discovers she is adopted and this discovery threatens everything she knows – her relationship with her “parents,” her pending marriage, her place in the Amish community, and the person she has become. The discovery of her adoption not only causes her to start asking questions about her birth mother, but to also challenge some of the rules of her faith which eventually leads to her being shunned by her community. To be shunned is when members of the church and her own family – parents and siblings – are to cease any social contact with her until she repents of her sins after which she may return to fellowship with the community.

Through all of the drama, we do get a peak into the lifestyle of the Amish people, which I have read that the book takes the reader further into detail and is worth reading. My children and I watched this movie together and thoroughly enjoyed it, but we all gasped (even Canyon) at the end when it left us wondering what happened when Katie met her biological mother. As a fan of Michael Landon, Jr’s movies, I know that he is not going to have us wondering for long which means that there must be a part two and possibly a part three movie coming to complete the series.

If you can’t wait, then I guess you could always read the book. If you can wait and you like hanging on the edge, then I have a chance for you to win your own copy of The Shunning on DVD.

Do you wanna dance? Well Ginny wants you to and you are gonna feel like dancing once you hear the opening title song of “Get In, I’m Drivin’” which is also the name of her most recent CD project set to release today. I did not know what to expect with this CD, but I knew I would probably like it as I did Ginny’s music the first time I ever heard her sing which was “back in the day” almost ten years ago. When I first saw her perform at a church near my home, I was still new to her music, but I left knowing that she was an artist that would be on my list of ones to follow.

To this day, I still absolutely love the upbeat tempo of her song “I Love the Way” (listen to it) from her third studio album “Beautiful,” and then on the flip side, the one song that just brings me to a complete stand still is the duet “Remember Me” (listen to it), she later sang with Mark Shultz.

Ginny’s interest in creating music on the piano took over her at an early age as did a degenerative eye condition that left her completely blind by the age of three. Despite the physical challenges she faced while growing up, her musical interest grew as well as her motivation to continue her pursuit of a career in music. With several albums and many awards behind her including being a three-time Dove Award winner and also named the Gospel Music Association’s New Artist of the Year in 2000, Ginny continues to make an impact in the Christian music arena as well as having success in mainstream media.

She has also found a way to use the talents she has been blessed with to assist in humanitarian efforts that included her aid in helping to rebuild New Orleans after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Ginny also launched The Fingerprint Initiative in 2005 which is a non-profit organization established to “bring hope to the world” by creating and developing programs for communities and people in need and also to partner with other already established non-profits with the same mission.

All of the work she has been doing behind the scenes might explain some of the reasons as to why it has been five years since her last album was released. “Get In, I’m Driving” is a mixture of R&B, jazz, and light-rock which works well together as an album that reminds me why I like this artist so much. Ginny’s voice is sultry, but not seductive, deep, but not heavy and you hang on her words because you know that what she is singing is heart felt, as she shares on her online journal, and not just lyrics that will get you to the end of the song. I don’t usually go for remakes, but I can only imagine that her rendition of Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground would make him proud. My two favorite songs are Joined at the Heart and Better that Way. You can listen to sample cuts of the CD.

Well, I finally got to find out! At first introduction, we learn that Simon is a geologist, a husband of a loving wife and father of two loving children, a son and a daughter, who all care about him and become extremely worried about his whereabouts when he fails to return home one day.

In their search to find out what has happened to Simon, they come across a batch of passports. Each of them have pictures of Simon, but each also have different names on them. So, who is Simon Miller? Even the people closest to him are asking the same question because the man they thought they knew isn’t the man he actually is and his familly needs answers. His wife Meredith and children Sarah and Kevin set off on an international adventure to find out who really is Simon Miller.

We have Walmart and Proctor & Gamble to thank again for another family-friendly movie coming to you this weekend. It is a little different from the ones they have presented in the past and will keep you in and out of your seat with excitement. There is intrigue (I like that) and action (much excitement), but the theme of family and relationship is still strong as we watch the depths that Simon’s family goes to discover the truth about him and to bring him back home safely.

Get the family together, pop the popcorn, and enjoy an evening of family time. Take a peak here to see a preview of Who is Simon Miller, and be sure to tune in on Saturday, August 6 to enjoy the movie in full.
